YouthRetreats & Trips2010 Summer Servant Trip

Ascension High School Youth
2010 Summer Servant Trip
Week of Service in Nashville, TN

Under direction of Group Workcamps, Inc., we will work on community service projects in an urban setting to meet the greatest needs of the community.

Sunday, June 13 (early morning departure) to Saturday, June 19, 2010 (mid-afternoon return)

*The program with Group Workcamps ends late morning on Friday. We will plan to do something relaxing and fun on Friday afternoon (ideas are Great America in Louisville, KY; horseback riding; hiking) and spend the night at a local church that evening. We will return to Waukesha on Saturday.

$295
Includes lodging, meals while at camp, and partial cost of van rental for the week. Youth are encouraged to bring spending money of their own while on the road.

$50 registration fee due February 14, 2010
$245 remaining registration due May 2, 2010

*youth account balances will be provided to families in mid-January. Fundraising events will take place in early 2010; some financial assistance will be available. Registration can be broken down into smaller payments. Talk to Elisabeth if affordability is an issue.

The Group Workcamps staff will place us in work crews of 6 (5 youth, 1 adult), generally with youth and adults from outside our church group. During our daily work, we should be ready to tackle any projects and expect to interact each day with local residents from the community. Projects could include working with children at a day camp, serving at food pantries, nursing homes, doing home repair, or serving at a homeless shelter. Projects are based on the greatest community need at the time we are there.

Trip participants must:

  • Have completed 9-12th grade
  • Be willing to work hard, stretch our comfort zones, and have fun!
  • Attend the 3 pre-trip meetings to prepare for our journey
  • Participate in trip fundraising activities in early 2010
  • Participate in pre- and post-trip worship services, dates TBD

We will stay at Camp Sycamore Creek, a summer camp just outside Nashville. We will stay in cabins (each holds up to 10 people) with bunk beds and with access to showers. The camp also has trails, a creek, and various athletic fields for use during our free time. More info: www.campsycamorecreek.org.

We wil travel by 12 or 15 passenger vans to and from Nashville, driven by the adult leaders.

The trip is approximately 9 hours each way.

The theme of the week is "Undeserved – The Story of the Prodigal Son" based on Luke 15. During group worship times, church group devotions, and our service experiences, we'll look at the characters of this story and discuss why Jesus told this amazing parable. We will examine how the parable relates to our lives, faith, and relationship with God.
